How TopDog Law Reimagined Legal Marketing
What would make a soon-to-graduate law student turn down a six-figure corporate law position to start his own firm? For James Helm, founder of TopDog Law, a friend’s success story sparked an unexpected entrepreneurial journey. “Watching my friend grow a business from zero to $1 million in revenue gave me the confidence to believe I could too,” James shares. His story offers a masterclass in turning industry conventions upside down and finding success through unconventional paths.
An Unconventional Path
The path to becoming a lawyer typically follows a predictable route: graduate from law school, join a prestigious firm, and climb the corporate ladder. With dual MBA and law degrees from Rutgers and a six-figure job offer in hand, James seemed destined for this trajectory. But life had other plans.
“My life was a rollercoaster, to say the least,” James reflects. During law school, a nagging injury from his high school wrestling days resulted in a battle with prescription medication addiction. “Getting taken to my knees because of the addiction really made me question everything about my life,” he shares. Now eight years sober, James views this challenge as the catalyst that forced him to reassess his career path. “I started to rethink—am I trying to be a lawyer because I want to be a lawyer? Or am I doing this because it looks good?”During his recovery, an unexpected opportunity emerged when a high school friend asked him to help sell digital marketing services to law firms. This side venture became transformative—not only did James build substantial recurring revenue, but he watched his friend grow a company from zero to $1 million. “I got to see somebody who wasn’t that much smarter than me build a company,” James explains. “It started creeping in my head, like, ‘If he can do this, maybe I can too.'”
Despite doubts from family and peers, James saw an opportunity that others missed. The traditional legal industry seemed ripe for disruption. “I knew if I was going to compete, I needed to do something different,” he explains. “I couldn’t outspend the big firms, but I could outsmart them.” Armed with insider knowledge of legal marketing and a fresh perspective on the industry, James set out to build a law firm that would break all the conventional rules. His first task? Creating a brand that would hold its own in Philadelphia’s crowded personal injury market.
Building a Brand That Stands Out
James’s first challenge was creating a memorable identity in Philadelphia’s crowded personal injury law market. His solution? A brand name that would stick in people’s minds long after their first interaction. “How many people can actually recall their lawyer’s name after an accident? I wanted to fix that,” James explains. Inspired by successful firms like “Law Boss,” he crafted the “TopDog Law” brand—a name that proved both memorable and meaningful.
“It’s not just about being catchy,” James emphasizes. “It’s about building trust through recognition. When someone’s been in an accident, they’re dealing with enough stress. Having a name they can easily remember and share with others makes a real difference.”
Finding Success Through Social Media
While established firms poured millions into television ads and billboards, James saw an untapped opportunity in digital marketing. “Other firms were stuck on TV and billboards—I knew my clients were online,” he shares. This insight led to a bold strategy: focusing on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, and leveraging influencer marketing to reach potential clients directly.
The approach was unconventional for the legal industry, but James understood something fundamental about his target market: They spent hours each day on social media, not watching daytime television. “I wanted to meet clients where they already were,” he explains. “Why spend a fortune on TV ads when I could build genuine connections through social media?”
The Pandemic Pivot
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, many law firms struggled with reduced caseloads and remote operations. For James, this challenge became a catalyst for transformation. “The pandemic forced us to rethink everything,” he recalls. “But sometimes the biggest challenges lead to the best opportunities.”
Instead of simply weathering the storm, James made the bold decision to pivot from case management to focusing exclusively on marketing efforts.
“Freeing myself from the day-to-day legal work allowed me to focus entirely on bringing in clients,” he explains. For James, playing to his strengths and recognizing where he could create the most value were key components in transitioning from the beaten path to the path unknown. James transformed TopDog Law’s business model by partnering with established law firms and concentrating on marketing and client acquisition: “Within a year, our monthly case volume had skyrocketed. We were helping more clients than ever by connecting them with the right legal teams.” Today, TopDog Law has made a name for itself as a marketing company, working hand-in-hand with select law firms that license the TopDog name and have joint representation of clients with their affiliate law firm, Helm Law Group.
Scaling Through Systems
As client load ramped up, James faced a new challenge: managing explosive growth. “Success can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared for it,” he shares. James focused on building robust systems and assembling the right team, ensuring TopDog Law maintained their forward momentum by:
- Creating specialized teams for marketing, client management, and technology
- Implementing clear workflows that everyone could understand and follow
- Establishing accountability measures to maintain quality at scale
“Building a team and creating processes that allow everyone to understand their role has been critical,” James explains. “It’s not enough to just bring in leads—you need to handle them professionally and efficiently.” This systematic approach transformed the business from processing a few dozen leads monthly to managing thousands while maintaining high service standards.
Founder-to-Founder: A Conversation with James and Jason
Sometimes, the best insights come from founders simply talking shop. During our conversation with TopDog Law founder James Helm and 82i founder Jason Shapiro, several key themes emerged about building a successful company.
On the Power of Compound Growth
Jason pointed out something remarkable about James’s journey: the power of compound growth. “You started small,” Jason noted, leaning forward in his chair. “You were getting five leads a month, and now we’re looking at 47,000 next year. You’ve got two phones, and now you have a 40-person team doing the call center.” This exponential growth didn’t happen by accident—it came from a deep understanding of his own strengths and where to focus them.
On Finding Your Path
When asked about finding his direction, James’s journey revealed the value of exploration. “I figured it out by trying a lot of different things,” James explained. “Started out thinking I wanted to be a corporate lawyer, and that wasn’t it. Then I got into marketing and selling advertising, and I realized I loved that. But even within that, I learned that my real passion wasn’t the technical side—it was building relationships, creating strategies, and figuring out how to scale things.” This willingness to experiment and pivot would prove crucial throughout his entrepreneurial journey.
On Seizing Opportunities
What struck Jason most was James’s ability to spot and seize opportunities along the way. While some entrepreneurs have tunnel vision, James keeps his eyes open for unexpected paths. “If an entrepreneur is overly focused on doing things one way,” Jason observed, “you miss opportunities.” This adaptability helped James transform challenges into stepping stones for growth.
On Learning from Others
“Entrepreneurs learn from other entrepreneurs,” Jason reflected. “I think about my story… I sort of saw others doing it, and I was like, I like that. I think I can do that, and [knowing that they had done it] that gives so much confidence.” This pattern of learning from peers has become a cornerstone of James’s leadership style.
On Building the Future
James’s enthusiasm for TopDog’s future is palpable. “We’re growing really fast,” he shared. “The next big focus is on continuing to develop our internal processes and making sure we’re delivering the best possible service to our partners and clients.” As far as long-term plans, James adds, “I’d love to explore other verticals outside of personal injury law.” If his journey so far is any indication, James has just scratched the surface of what he and the TopDog Law team can achieve.
